Did you know that smiling can make you feel happier? According to the facial feedback hypothesis, how we use our facial muscles can influence how we feel emotionally. While some still debate the hypothesis, a recent study led by Stanford research scientist Nicholas Coles concluded that smiling does make us happy. That’s great news for those who enjoy smiling. But what if you’re self-conscious about the appearance of your teeth? Chipped, crooked, misshapen, or discolored teeth can make us hesitant to smile, affecting our confidence and our happiness. That’s where a simple veneer procedure comes in. Veneers can transform your smile, addressing imperfections and giving you the confidence to share your smile with the world—and feel amazing doing it.
What Is A Dental Veneer?
A dental veneer is a shell that dental lab technicians customize to resemble and enhance your natural tooth. The technicians use high-quality materials like porcelain—or sometimes a tooth-colored composite—to create the shell.
People often choose veneers to camouflage cosmetic imperfections. Whether you have a chipped tooth, gaps, or stains, a porcelain veneer can help conceal these dental flaws.
To be a candidate for veneers, you shouldn’t have existing oral health issues such as gum disease or extreme cavities. We’ll need to address these concerns prior to exploring the veneer procedure.
What Does The Veneer Procedure Entail?
There’s no need to worry about pain when getting veneers, as the procedure is simple and virtually painless.
Dr. Gregory Zirakian will begin by numbing the area to ensure you’re comfortable. Next, he will remove a small amount of enamel from your teeth to prepare them for the veneers. Afterward, he will take impressions of your teeth to send to the lab. Then, skilled technicians will craft your custom veneers.
It will take Dr. Zirakian approximately two visits to complete the veneer process. The procedure takes around 45-50 minutes. At your first visit, Dr. Zirakian will prepare your teeth and place temporary veneers. You’ll wear the temporaries for about two weeks until you return for your second appointment. At this second visit, you’ll try out your custom veneers, and if satisfied, Dr. Zirakian will bond them in place. Your teeth will look and feel as good as new, and you’ll be ready to show off your smile!
What Are the Benefits of Dental Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are a natural-looking, low-maintenance way to enhance your smile. Custom-made to fit your teeth, veneers mimic the appearance and feel of natural enamel. The procedure is minimally invasive, requiring less enamel removal than crowns, and many patients don’t even need anesthesia.
Caring for veneers is simple—no special products or routines are needed. Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush, flossing daily, and using mouthwash. Regular dental cleanings are essential for keeping your veneers in top condition and prolonging their lifespan.
While porcelain veneers are stain-resistant, it’s still wise to limit tobacco, coffee, red wine, and other stain-causing foods and drinks to keep them looking their best. Also, be sure to avoid biting into hard items like ice or candy, as excessive pressure can chip the veneers. We don’t recommend using whitening products at home, as they won’t brighten veneers, and their abrasiveness can scratch the surface!
By following our guidelines for proper care, you can help your veneers stay beautiful for years to come!
