Same Day Emergency Services in East Longmeadow
You may be wondering: what counts as a dental emergency?
While all dental pain requires treatment, not everything requires same day services. We recommend you contact us about an same day appointment if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms.
Severe and persistent tooth pain.- A knocked-out tooth.
- Excessive bleeding in your mouth.
- Swelling or infection in the gums.
- Broken or chipped teeth.
While you may not need immediate treatment for all of these issues, it’s essential to seek dental care as soon as possible. If these problems are impacting your ability to eat or function, or cause non-stop pain, we recommend you book a same-day emergency appointment!
The Same Day Tooth Extraction Process
At East Longmeadow Family Dental Center, we try to save your natural teeth whenever possible. Unfortunately, they can’t always be saved.
In some cases, the damage or infection in your tooth may be so severe that we’ll need to remove it. This is especially true for teeth that have already had root canal treatment.
When your tooth is causing you severe and persistent tooth pain, we will provide one of two extraction methods.
Simple Extraction
Typically, we’ll use a simple extraction whenever possible.
This process involves using specialized dental tools to loosen your tooth and gently pull it from its socket. We use a local numbing agent to keep you comfortable throughout the entire process and provide extensive aftercare instructions.
After a simple tooth extraction, you can expect to experience some discomfort or even swelling. However, the pain is short-lived and easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications! For swelling, we recommend elevating your head and using an ice pack. In just 48 to 72 hours, you’ll be back to your everyday activities.
Surgical Extraction
When your tooth is difficult to reach or impacted, we’ll use a surgical extraction.
While more invasive than a simple extraction, we use the same local numbing agent to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
However, this method involves making an incision in your gums to reveal the tooth trapped underneath. In some cases, we can then safely reach the tooth and pull it out. In other cases, we may need to carefully break the tooth into smaller segments and gently remove them from the socket. We will then flush out your socket to remove any remaining debris and stitch your gums back up to facilitate the healing process.
After a surgical extraction, expect to feel some pain and discomfort. Additionally, swelling and bruising are common consequences of a surgical extraction. Fortunately, this pain is also managed using over-the-counter medications, though your healing process will take longer.
It’s important to note that while impacted wisdom teeth often require surgical extractions, Dr. Zirakian does not perform them and will refer you to an oral surgeon.
