Imagine sitting down to enjoy a perfectly grilled steak, a fresh bagel from your favorite breakfast spot, or even a simple sandwich, only to struggle because missing teeth make chewing difficult or painful. Each bite feels like a reminder of what you’ve lost. Now picture a different moment: you’re at an important family gathering—a wedding or a milestone birthday—but you hesitate to smile for photos, worried about the gaps in your teeth or the instability of your dentures. These everyday challenges can take a toll on your confidence, comfort, and quality of life. No one should have to endure that. Fortunately, a mini implant can make all the difference! This innovative treatment provides a stable, long-lasting solution for missing teeth, allowing you to eat the foods you love and smile freely again.
Mini Implant Uses
Mini dental implants are versatile tooth replacement tools that can support various restorations. We use them to replace one tooth with a crown, multiple teeth in a row with a bridge, or an entire arch with a denture. If you’ve lost many teeth throughout your mouth, we can use a combination of implant-supported restorations to comprehensively restore your oral function. Whether you’re missing one tooth or all of them, we have a solution for you!
Implant Size
As their name implies, mini implants are smaller than traditional implants. At less than 3 mm wide, these narrow-diameter implants are about the width of a toothpick. This means they can fit in weaker or narrower jawbones. That’s especially valuable if you’ve been dealing with tooth loss for a while, as you’ve likely experienced jawbone loss. A dentist may have even told you that you weren’t eligible for dental implants because of the condition of your jaw. Fortunately, mini implants make advanced tooth replacement solutions accessible to a wider audience because of their narrower design.
One-Piece Design
The width isn’t the only remarkable design feature of a mini dental implant. Unlike conventional implants, mini implants are just one piece. Instead of a separate abutment, the mini implant post has an integrated O-ball that securely anchors your restoration, ensuring exceptional stability. The upgraded design has important benefits for you:
- Quicker procedure: A traditional dental implant is placed in stages, with each piece requiring a separate surgery and healing time before the next step can begin. However, because a mini implant is a single slim post, Dr. Zirkain can place it in one visit, making the process faster and more convenient.
- Less risk of infection: Bacteria may accumulate between the components of a conventional implant, leading to infection. The buildup can even cause peri-implantitis, an inflammatory condition that breaks down the tissues around the implant, potentially leading to implant failure.
- Lower costs: Mini dental implants are more affordable than conventional implants for several reasons, including lower material costs. For example, the absence of a separate abutment helps reduce expenses.
The Mini Implant Procedure
We offer a complimentary exam to help you learn more about your dental implant options. At this visit, we’ll also take X-rays to determine the amount and quality of available bone and guide you in your decision-making. If mini dental implants are right for you, we’ll go ahead and schedule your procedure.
An important advantage for many patients is how gentle the mini implant procedure truly is. Dr. Zirakian can use a much less invasive technique to secure these narrow, one-piece implants. Here’s what you can expect: we’ll begin by getting you comfortably numb using a local anesthetic. Dr. Zirakian will review your treatment plan and then make a pilot hole through the gums where your implant should be positioned. He can then screw the implant directly into the bone tissue.
Mini implants are “immediate-loading implants,” meaning they can support a false tooth right away. We’ll attach a temporary restoration as soon as Dr. Zirakian has secured your implant. All in all, the procedure to place a mini dental implant is exceptionally quick, typically taking less than 45 minutes! As soon as your custom restoration has been fabricated in the lab, you’ll visit us again and Dr. Zirakian will cement it in place.
When you opt for a mini implant, you can expect a more streamlined process from start to finish. Unlike conventional implants, which require several months due to their invasive, multi-stage placement, mini implants reduce the timeline to a matter of weeks. With their unique design features and simplified procedure, mini implants cost about half as much as conventional implants. For those with busy schedules and tight budgets, these are important advantages!
