How One-Piece Dental Implants Changed Implant Dentistry

One-Piece Dental Implants in East Longmeadow, MA | The Benefits

One-piece dental implants aren’t a new idea. In fact, most original implant designs were one-piece systems! As far back as the ancient Mayan civilization, people have been replacing missing teeth. While we no longer use pieces of seashells as implants, the principle remains the same: missing teeth cannot go unreplaced. In today’s age, we use titanium dental implants that embed in your jaw. And by using one-piece implants, Dr. Z provides numerous benefits for patients like you! Book a free consultation with him in East Longmeadow, MA, to learn more.

One-Piece Dental Implants 101

One-Piece Dental Implants in East Longmeadow, MA | The BenefitsTitanium dental implants are biocompatible. This means that when we screw them into your jaw, the material integrates with your bone, creating a stable connection. Then, using that connection, we support artificial restorations that replace your missing teeth.

One-piece dental implants are a single solid piece of titanium, rather than different parts that come together to form a whole. Where conventional implants have multiple components, one-piece dental implants only have one component to place.

In recent years, the idea of a one-piece dental implant has become more appealing to both dentists and patients. Not only are these innovations less time-consuming for the patient, but they’re also less complex for the dentist to place.

The Benefits of One-Piece Dental Implants

One-piece dental implants offer a host of benefits over their conventional two-piece counterparts, including:

  • Lower risk of infection: When an implant has multiple components, it leaves small seams between parts. These microgaps accumulate bacteria and, without proper hygiene, may contribute to the formation of peri-implantitis. Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory condition that affects the tissues around your implant, potentially leading to implant failure. One-piece implants don’t have seams between parts, significantly lowering your risk of infection.
  • Simpler placement process: Because one-piece dental implants have a sleek design, they allow for a simpler placement procedure. Rather than using an incision to access your jaw and creating a large opening, we typically only need to create a pilot hole. We then place the implant using the hole as a guide, permanently restoring your smile without all the hassle.
  • More affordable cost: The more components, the more expensive your implant treatment will be. One-piece dental implants only have one component, making them less costly.

To learn if you’re eligible for one-piece dental implants, we recommend booking a free consultation. There, we will assess your jawbone and determine which implant best suits your case. Then, we’ll discuss insurance coverage, pricing, and any financing solutions available to you.

Our Implant Restorations

East Longmeadow Family Dental Center uses both conventional two-piece implants and one-piece implants. Typically, the one-piece implants we use are mini dental implants. These small titanium posts have both a sleek design and a slim diameter!

When you’re missing teeth, we may use one-piece mini dental implants to support a:

Crown

When replacing a missing tooth, we often use an implant-supported crown. A traditional dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers a damaged tooth. This cap fits over the entire tooth, protecting it from infection and reinforcing its structure to keep your smile functional.

But an implant crown doesn’t fit over natural teeth. Instead, it fits over an implant, anchoring in place to restore your smile.

Bridge

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. Traditionally, dental bridges have crowns on each end that cover your healthy teeth, supporting the replacement teeth that fill the gap in your smile.

An implant bridge doesn’t require altering your healthy teeth. We simply place a row of implants in your jawbone and secure a row of artificial teeth on top. Dental bridges “bridge” the gap in your smile, allowing you to chew and smile confidently again.

Denture

There are many different types of dentures. Traditional dentures rely on your jawbone for support, but often loosen over time. Implant-supported dentures are anchored to your jawbone, permanently restoring your smile.

At our office in East Longmeadow, we offer 3 types of implant dentures:

  • Overdentures: When a patient wants removable dentures supported by dental implants, we offer overdentures. These prosthetics “snap” on and off your implants, while remaining secure when in place.
  • Semi-removable roundhouse bridges: If a patient prefers a less-removable option, we offer a roundhouse bridge. This restoration looks more natural, as it is a row of artificial teeth bonded together to follow the arch of your jaw. Semi-removable roundhouse bridges are anchored to a row of dental implants that we strategically place around your jaw, and these restorations are only removed by us.
  • Non-removable roundhouse bridges: For the closest you can get to your natural teeth, we recommend a non-removable roundhouse bridge. These restorations look like natural teeth, but secure on multiple implants. We actually cement these roundhouse bridges in place, replicating the look, feel, and function of your natural smile
